Marketing food to kids: Continuing the conversation

By now, you’ve had a chance to read the proposed voluntary principles published on April 28, 2011, by the Interagency Working Group on Food Marketed to Children.  Made up of representatives from the FTC, FDA, USDA, and CDC, the group issued a draft calling on the food industry voluntarily to step up its efforts to improve the nutritional quality of foods they market directly to kids ages 2 to 17.  The proposal — which isn’t a regulation — suggests ways to strengthen the voluntary efforts that are already underway.

If you have clients in the food industry or if you have an interest in the important issues raised by the proposal, take out your calendar to mark some key dates.  The agencies have extended the deadline for written comment to Thursday, July 14, 2011.  In addition, they’ve announced a half-day public forum in Washington, D.C., on Tuesday, May 24th, at HHS’s Hubert H. Humphrey Building, 200 Independence Avenue, S.W., so that people can make brief statements on the proposed voluntary principles.

Interested in attending?  Due to space limitations, you have to register in advance by emailing your name and affiliation to foodmarketedtochildren@ftc.gov by 5:00 on Friday, May 20th.

Thinking about making an oral statement at the forum? Email foodmarketedtochildren@ftc.gov by 5:00 on Wednesday, May 18th, saying whether your comments will relate primarily to the proposed nutrition principles or to the proposed marketing definitions.
