Big Data: What’s on the agenda?

Whether it’s advances in medical research, making sure buses are where they need to be during rush hour, or reducing how long consumers are stuck on hold listening to canned music, Big Data promises a lot for the future. But what are the risks it could be used to disadvantage some people? The FTC just released the preliminary agenda for the September 15, 2014, workshop, Big Data: A Tool for Inclusion or Exclusion? How will the topics on the table affect your business?

The first panel – Assessing the Current Environment – will survey the lay of the land. What’s the impact now on how Big Data is being used?

The next panel – What’s on the Horizon with Big Data? – will explore where it’s going. What are the potential benefits and possible harms for particular populations of consumers?

Surveying the Legal Landscape will consider the intersection of Big Data with antidiscrimination and consumer protection laws. Are they in harmony or are there inconsistencies? Could there be gaps in the statutory framework?

The final panel will talk about Mapping the Path Forward. Are best practices needed to protect consumers?

If you’ve attended FTC conferences and workshops in recent years, there’s more big news: We’ve moved. This summer most FTC staff offices relocated to the Constitution Center, 400 7th Street, S.W., in Washington, DC. Big Data will be held at the new venue, which features its own subway stop just steps away at 7th and D Streets, S.W., on Metro’s Blue, Orange, Yellow, Green, and Silver Lines.  Bookmark the event page and check back for more information about finding your way around our new neighborhood.
